The Master’s Program in Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga, successfully held an inspiring Guest Lecture on November 13, 2025, featuring Prof. Dr. Tri Arief Sardjono, S.T., M.T., Dean of the School of Interdisciplinary Manufacturing and Technology (SIMT), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS).

Prof. Tri Arief, a leading expert in biomedical image analysis and processing, shared his extensive experience in the development of health technology, artificial intelligence, and medical devices.

In his lecture titled “Biomedical Image Processing and Analysis,” Prof. Tri Arief highlighted the rapid advancement of medical imaging technology in the digital transformation era, driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). He emphasized the critical role of biomedical engineering in supporting data-driven diagnosis and therapy through medical imaging modalities such as MRI, CT scans, and ultrasonography.

He further explained the implementation of Deformable Models and Machine Learning techniques for accurate segmentation of medical images, including his innovative research on the Spring-Charged Particles Model (SCPM) for spine segmentation in X-ray images and the UNet-ResNet34 deep learning model for carotid artery elasticity analysis.

Beyond his research excellence, Prof. Tri Arief is also an accomplished innovator who has developed numerous technologies and intellectual properties, such as the ITS Braille Printing Machine, Self-Service Health Check Kiosk, Smart Funeral Stretcher, and medical applications like USGArt and FaceStroke. His dedication to technology for social welfare earned him an award from the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs.

This guest lecture provided valuable insights for postgraduate students in Biomedical Engineering UNAIR, especially in understanding how biomedical image processing is applied in medical device development and health technology innovation. The interactive discussion encouraged students to bridge the disciplines of engineering, science, and medicine to foster innovation in biomedical research.
